Secretary-General of WMO receives Permanent Representative of Seychelles with WMO
On 17 October 2024, the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Professor Celeste Saulo, received the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Seychelles with WMO, Mr Vincent Amelie, at the organization's headquarters in Geneva.

During the meeting, Mr Amelie informed about the strategic planning and related activities that are being undertaken by the Seychelles Meteorological Department (SMA) with the support of WMO and the Climate Risk and Early Warning Systems (CREWS) initiative for the Southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO). He emphasized the importance of a strong leadership to ensure synergies between the various projects currently in implementation in the region. In particular, Mr Amelie highlighted the vital role of the Organization through improving services provided at headquarters and regional office, which support national efforts to develop weather, climate and flood forecasting procedures and services, as well as monitoring operations. He also underlined Seychelles' commitment to enhancing cooperation and support in the Southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO) region in exchanging information and knowledge. Mr Amelie is committed to pursue a regional role in the context of climate services and flash flood guidance to SWIO based on the good work and achievements of SMA, and called for WMO’s support in this endeavour.

The Secretary-General congratulated Mr Amelie for his leadership role, the good work and SMA’s achievements. She reaffirmed the WMO commitment to continue providing the support that will strengthen the SMA to deliver its mandate that ultimately meet the goals of the Government of Seychelles and its international commitments. Professor Saulo expressed her eagerness for further cooperation with Seychelles to achieve common developmental goals within a national framework for climate action, including the Early Warning for All (EW4All). She highlighted the importance if engaging potential beneficiaries of weather and climate information and services at Ministerial level to advocate for further support to strengthening SMA in support of user sectors, in particular in the context of the Blue Economy.
