METEO END OF YEAR BANNER

The Seychelles Meteorological Authority (SMA) marked a major milestone on 17 December 2025, celebrating ten years of service with the Meteorological Conference 2025, held alongside its End-of-Year Gathering under the theme “Celebrating a Decade of Transformation, Innovation & Resilience.” The event brought together government leaders, international partners, stakeholders and SMA staff to reflect on how the Authority has grown—and to look ahead to the future of weather and climate services in Seychelles.

Over the past decade, SMA has evolved from a small technical service into a modern national authority playing a vital role in keeping Seychelles safe and informed. Today, SMA delivers trusted weather forecasts, climate information and early warnings that help protect lives, support key sectors such as aviation, fisheries and tourism, and strengthen the country’s resilience to climate change.

Welcoming guests to the event, Chairman of the SMA Board, Mr Gerard Hoareau, highlighted the dedication and teamwork behind SMA’s progress. He reflected on the Authority’s journey over the last ten years, noting important achievements such as improved governance, international quality certification and stronger financial sustainability. He also praised the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Mr Vincent Amelie, whose vision and commitment have helped guide SMA through a period of significant growth and change.

The event was also an important moment for sharing information with the public and partners. SMA officially presented its Annual Report 2025, which highlights the Authority’s key achievements during a landmark year. The report outlines improvements in early warning services, climate information, digital systems and partnerships, and shows how SMA continues to adapt to increasing weather and climate risks affecting Seychelles.

In addition, the conference provided the opportunity to disseminate the National Framework for Climate Services (NFCS). This new national framework is designed to improve how climate information is shared and used across sectors. By bringing users and providers together, the NFCS helps ensure that climate information supports better planning and decision-making across the country.

From an international perspective, the institution is regarded as a showcase among developing national meteorological and hydrological services, reflecting strong governance, alignment with global early warning initiatives, and an expanding contribution to regional cooperation. Continued Government support is seen as a key enabler of this progress, alongside ongoing technical collaboration, as climate risks intensify and expectations for weather and climate services continue to grow.

Beyond the presentations, the event was a moment to thank SMA staff—past and present—along with national and international partners who have supported the Authority’s journey. It also marked the start of a new chapter, as SMA moves forward with its Strategic Plan 2025–2029, focusing on innovation, people-centred services and stronger early warnings.

As SMA celebrates its first decade, the message was clear: the Authority remains committed to serving the people of Seychelles with reliable, timely and science-based weather and climate information—today and into the future.
